John Milligan spoke to our students on his experiences as a former Audit Manager at Coopers & Lybrand, and  for the last 33 years Managing Principal at Milligan & Company, LLC.

For over 30 years, Milligan & Company has assisted Government agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations and private sector clients by performing compliance reviews and providing technical assistance and training in the areas of Grants Management, Transportation, Economic Development, Funding Strategies, Civil Rights, and Diversity, and Financial Internal Controls. Mengel Metzger Barr & Co. Open House

 

Today, AU accounting students and faculty attended an open house at Mengel Metzger Barr & Co. (MMB) in Rochester.

MMB is a public accounting firm, serving the community since 1975 by providing a full range of accounting services, including tax, assurance/audit, consulting, dispute resolution, business valuation, forensic and investigative accounting, and litigation support.

AU students spoke to their hiring staff and various partners on how to begin accounting careers, and what new accountants can expect when working at MMB and other regional accounting firms.

LAW241: Guest Speaker – Ms. Paige Jensen

 

Paige Jensen discussed the importance of student involvement in campus and community activities, and shared the course of her journey as a recent Alfred University graduate, life-long Saxon, and business person.

Paige, born in California and raised in Idaho, was recruited to play volleyball for Alfred University in upstate New York where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 2014 and her MBA in 2015.  While attending Alfred, Paige studied abroad on the Mediterranean Island of Cyprus where she was also recruited to play for the University of Nicosia Volleyball Team.

Always having a passion for athletics, Paige served her local community as Miss Western Idaho 2013 and as Miss Washington County USA 2016. She was a top 10 finalist at both Miss Idaho and Miss Idaho USA, and while she didn’t come home with a crown, she did receive the Miss Congeniality award from both organizations.

This Idaho girl loves filling her free time with hiking, boating, fishing, weight-training, traveling and coaching high school softball!

LAW241: Mr. William J. Rice ’78 President and CEO of CerX LLC

 

Mr. Bill Rice spoke on the topic of contracts, and their negotiation in an international context.  He also shared his perspective on having a successful business career.

William J. Rice 78 earned a B.S. in ceramic engineering and was a member of the St. Pat’s Board.  Bill retired as vice president of mining for Alcoa Inc., the world’s leading producer and manager of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina facilities.  Since retiring, he has served as a management lecturer for the University of Tennessee, as is the current GM for Borla Performance Industries.  He is also the President and CEO of CerX LLC, a manufacturer of ceramic filtration systems.

LAW241: Guest Speaker Mr. Craig Gestring of the Department of Justice, and Mr. F. Paul Greene of Harter Secrest & Emery Will Discuss Cyber Risk and Data Security Issues

 

Mr. Craig Gestring is a career prosecutor. He has prosecuted criminal cases in State, Federal, and Military courts around the country. Gestring is an Assistant United States Attorney with the Criminal Division in the Western District of New York where he prosecutes a wide variety of federal crimes including environmental crimes, white collar crimes, frauds, threat cases, and gun crimes. Gestring’s cyber work includes prosecuting online crimes against children and coordinating cyber investigations involving BOTs, intrusions, and hacking.

Gestring is a combat veteran, having spent a long, hot, and dusty year doing Army stuff with an M-16 in the Al Anbar Province of Western Iraq.

Mr. Paul Greene, Partner of the law firm of Harter Secrest & Emery.  Paul brings years of experience to bear handling complex litigation matters in highly regulated industries. He provides clients with strategies to prevent, address, and resolve disputes in areas including privacy and data security, health care, and construction claims and design professional defense.

As chair of the Firm’s Privacy and Data Security practice group, Paul counsels clients of all sizes in a wide range of industries concerning all aspects of pre-breach preparation and risk management, including security and vulnerability assessments, policy and procedure review, breach response planning and drills, as well as board and management education on cyber risk issues. After the breach, Paul, his team, and the team’s professional consultants provide a full array of breach coach and response services, including breach response and remediation, crisis management and communication, internal and governmental investigations, breach notification, and potential litigation or regulatory action.

Paul’s health care practice has placed him at the forefront of Medicaid reimbursement litigation against New York State in the long-term care space, litigating state-wide to champion the rights of long-term care providers.

Paul’s construction and design professional experience includes construction projects and improvements, both public and private, of all sizes. He has extensive experience with public authority improvements, including performance and payment bond claims. Specific industry experience includes water delivery and processing systems, landfills, and construction of medical facilities.

Paul’s clients have included long-term and health care providers, insurers, and groups; Fortune 100 companies; a major credit card and travel-related services company; an international shipping and logistics company; an international printing and packaging company; a health care trade association; an agricultural cooperative; a public water authority; design professionals and construction companies; automotive dealers of all sizes; as well as closely held businesses and individuals.

He has litigated in numerous venues, including the Supreme Court of the State of New York (both on the trial and appellate level, as well as before the New York State Court of Appeals), United States District Courts around the country, the American Arbitration Association and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution. He also devotes a significant portion of his time to pro-bono representation and support of cultural organizations.

Fluent in German, Paul has also represented a number of German-language clients in commercial disputes before American judicial and arbitral tribunals.
