Mr. Richard A. Resnick spoke to LAW241 students today on the topic of white collar crime, and of his experiences as a prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Western District of New York.  He explained that while on his way to obtaining his CPA, he instead chose to go to law school and use his accounting skills with the Internal Revenue Service where he honed his legal and investigatory skills.

Richard A. Resnick, Assistant U.S. Attorney in Charge of the Rochester Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York.  He obtained his law degree from the State University at Buffalo Faculty of Law and Jurisprudence, and his undergraduate Accounting degree from Alfred University.

Mrs. Shequeila Birdsong of the US Department of Labor visited Alfred University and spoke on Wage and Hour issues, and various other labor laws.

Mrs. Birdsong is the Community Outreach and Planning Specialist for the Federal Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division.  She began her federal service with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) where she spent a decade working in various positions.  Her final position at the IRS was as a Taxpayer Advocate.

Carol Kando-Pineda of the FTC spoke to AU students today.  She is Counsel in the FTC’s Division of Consumer and Business Education where she leads teams to create free print materials, websites, and videos to help people avoid scams, manage their money and make wise buys. Carol began her FTC career as a staff attorney bringing false advertising cases; she then became the agency’s Legislative Counsel, serving for several years as a liaison between the FTC and Congress.

Garrett Gluth Esq., Chief of the Legal Analysis Branch of the Internal Revenue Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) and staff member William Chapman Esq. spoke to the MBA657 Advanced Taxation class to explain what professional responsibilities are required of those who give tax advice, or represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service. This is one of many topics covered by current CPA licensing exam.

OPR’s mission and objectives are to support effective tax administration by ensuring that all tax practitioners, tax preparers, and other third parties in the tax system adhere to professional standards and follow the law.

Paul Simon is a senior official of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 2, which encompasses New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In his current position, he leads EPA Region 2’s climate change efforts. He guides Region 2’s development of strategies for promoting climate change mitigation and climate adaptation, and serves as a liaison on climate change issues with other EPA offices as well as other federal and state government agencies, municipalities and other stakeholders.

Mr. Simon has been with EPA since 1985 and for many years, served there as a managing attorney. As the Deputy Regional Counsel from 2005 to 2010, he worked closely with the Regional Counsel in the management and direction of an office of eighty lawyers providing legal support for the Agency’s implementation and enforcement of many federal environmental laws. He also directly managed the office’s legal efforts relating to the Hudson River PCBs Superfund Site. In addition, in 2009, Mr. Simon served on a 4-month detail in EPA Headquarters as Acting Deputy Director of the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water.

Mr. Simon earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and his Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University.
