VITA Training: Southern Tier CA$H of Hornell Training AU Students for Tax Return Preparation

Today, Southern Tier CA$H (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) trained its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers by focusing on the State Returns (NY focused), ACA (Affordable Care Act), TaxSlayer software, Premium Tax Credits, and Exemptions. They covered VITA Site Operations and Compliance, what is expected of their volunteers, and what to expect this tax season.

CA$H is an IRS sponsored VITA program, led by Arbor Housing and Development, offering free tax assistance for low-to-moderate income families and individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need help in preparing their own tax returns.

IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Law241 Guest Speaker: Ms. Carol Kando-Pineda of the Federal Trade Commission

Carol Kando-Pineda is Counsel in the FTC’s Division of Consumer and Business Education where she leads teams to create free print materials, websites, and videos to help people avoid scams, manage their money and make wise buys. Carol began her FTC career as a staff attorney bringing false advertising cases; she then became the agency’s Legislative Counsel, serving for several years as a liaison between the FTC and Congress.

Emeritus Prof. of Political Science Robert A. Heineman lectured on the interplay of Constitutional Law and business regulation (source of regulatory power, court deference, and regulatory limits).

VITA Training: United Way of Allegany County

Today, Shawn Currier of United Way of Allegany County started training Alfred University students for the coming changes to this year tax return preparation season.

United Way of Allegany County and Alfred University have long been partners in serving the tax-paying local community by providing free tax filing services to those who qualify.

LAW241 Guest Speaker: Jill Crandall of the Career Development Center

Jill Crandall of the Career Development Center spoke to the class about career and internship resources available to students, and resume / internet best practices.

Jill is the Assistant Director in the Career Development Center, a general career counselor, and also manages Alfred University’s internship and co-op programs for credit.

AU Business School among Princeton Review’s 2017 ‘Best’

Alfred University’s School of Business has been included in a new survey by The Princeton Review of the best business schools in the U.S. AU is featured in The Review’s 2017 edition of The Best 294 Business Schools.

“We chose the 294 schools in this book based on our high regard for their academics and our assessment of institutional data we collect from the schools,” Robert Franek, Princeton Review Senior Vice President/Publisher said this week in announcing the new edition.

The Princeton Review developed its review of best business schools in part through a survey of 25,000 students attending business schools in the U.S. The survey asked the students about their school's academics, student body, and campus life as well as about themselves and their career plans.

AU’s School of Business drew particular praise for its “intimate environment,” interaction between students and professors, and support services such as the Robert R. McComsey Career Development Center, according to Franek.

Alfred University again among the nation’s 2017 best, says The Princeton Review

Alfred University is again among the nation’s “best” colleges, according to The Princeton Review’s 2017 edition of its college guide, “The Best 381 Colleges.”

“Outstanding, talented and dedicated” describes Alfred University’s faculty, the guide says. “The professors are always pushing you to reach your full potential” and “are always willing to put time into student independent projects.”

According to the guide, “Students also rave about the small class sizes. ‘It is the closet to one-on-one teaching you can get.’”

Brookings 2015 Study Ranks Alfred University Higher than Yale, Dartmouth

Alfred University (AU) scored on par with Princeton and better than Yale and Dartmouth in the recently released Brookings Institution's "value added" assessment of some 4,000 schools nationwide.

AU was also the best-rated school in Western New York.
